Back To Nature's Roots
Student Work
The project is about designing editorial feature spreads for an existing online article about the effectiveness of pyrethrin flowers as a natural insecticide, and the opportunities the cultivation of the flower has brought to the community of Gilgil, Kenya. The objective of the design is to tell a compelling visual story that focuses on the deeply rooted love and nostalgia the locals have for the beautiful but deadly pyrethrum plant. The concept of roots is used to make delicate typographic details feel like they are growing from the spine and columns. The light process of cyanotype, similar to the drying process of the flowers, inspired the style of the illustrations. Thoughtfully placed flower elements and insects, create patterns that bloom with character illustrations inspired by local Kenyan art.
